One of the hardest things in a relationship is loving someone who is not growing at your pace. Here is how to hold space for them without losing yourself.
You have done the inner work. You have read the books, attended the workshops, sat with your pain, and chosen to grow. And now you look across the table at the person you love most — and they are still exactly where they were two years ago.
This is one of the loneliest places a woman can find herself.
You love them. You don't want to leave. But you are also quietly suffocating under the weight of growing alone.
First — A Truth You Need to Hear
You cannot change another person. Not through love, not through patience, not through perfectly crafted conversations at midnight. Change — real, lasting change — only happens when someone decides they want it for themselves.
This is not a failure of your love. It is simply the boundary of where your power ends and theirs begins.
What You Can Do
1. Share, don't preach. There is a fine line between sharing your growth with someone and making them feel inadequate for not sharing it. Speak about your journey in first person — "I learned something that helped me" — not "you should try this."
2. Create space, not pressure. Sometimes people resist change because they feel pushed. When you stop making their growth your mission, they sometimes begin to grow on their own — in their own time, in their own way.
3. Continue growing yourself. Do not pause your evolution waiting for someone to catch up. Your growth is not an insult to them — it is an invitation.
4. Be honest about your needs. You are allowed to need a partner who is also working on themselves. This is not too much to ask. Voice it — kindly, clearly, and without ultimatum if possible.
The Hardest Question
At some point, every woman in this situation must ask herself: am I growing with this person, or am I growing despite them?
There is no shame in either answer. But there is great courage required to be honest about which one is true.
Love is not meant to be a ceiling. If your relationship is becoming the thing that limits how fully you can live — that is worth a very honest conversation.
You deserve a love that grows. You deserve a partner who, even if they move slowly, is at least moving.
